“He’ll Understand” – Joyce Barrett

“He’ll Understand”
Joyce Barrett
Sharper Brothers
www.sharpradiogospelsuperfest.com
Joyce Barrett of Houston, Texas, does some fine old-school singing on “He’ll
Understand,” which on the CD single is credited to other writers, but
presumably for the arrangement—the song is properly attributed to longtime
National Baptist Convention music department leader Lucie Eddie Campbell, who
wrote it in 1933.
Backed by a pumping band and a gospel quartet (with Roy Reed as executive
producer of the single, could the BGVs be labelmates the Zion Jubilees?),
Barrett gives the song an uptempo, quartet style treatment. She repeats the
“Oh, when I come to the end of my journey” verse over and over, and it would
have been ideal to hear the other verses, but nevertheless, she puts the song
in full gear and sells it during the vamp.

He Done It All Me-Rev.J C.Jenkins-Sharper Brothers Recording Artist
Rev. J.C. Jenkins Don’t You Forget to Remember Sharp Records www.sharprecordsusa.com
By Bob Marovich lead vocals of Rev. J. C. Jenkins, is a nod to the deep
southern soul quartet sound of the 1970s and 1980s. The major seventh Northern
Soul harmonies combined with Jenkins’ pulpit-hued raspy lead vocals are most
evident on “He’s Done It All for Me,” the opening track on the group’s Sharp
Records album, Don’t You Forget to Remember. The song’s recounting of biblical
miracles establishes the premise that if He did it then, He will do it now. Or,
as Jenkins declares, “God never done nobody wrong.” Leaving one’s troubles at
the doorstep of Jesus is also the theme of “Straighten it Out” and of a funky
remake of the classic gospel quartet handclapper, “Let Me Lean on You.” The
title track is decent, although the more than one minute introduction leaves
the listener wondering at first whether it will be an instrumental track. The
production quality suffers a bit from background hiss, and the simple, stripped
down CD info provides no information on the group other than its national booking
contact info and Reverb Nation website. What we learn at Reverb Nation is that
the quartet hails from Gadsden, Alabama, and that 50 percent of the sales of
the album will go to the charity Keep a Child Alive. One thing is for sure:
these guys can sing. Don’t You Forget to Remember is reminiscent of the 1970s
and 1980s DIY projects that gave quartets like the Sounds of Joy an aural
business card to promote their live programs and radio appearances. Three of

On Fisherman, their six-track EP, Detroit quartet Favour is all
about getting you ready…for your blessings, for a miracle, and for the day

about getting you ready…for your blessings, for a miracle, and for the day
Jesus returns.
Favour is a sweet-singing quartet with the smoothness of Atlantic
Starr and the Manhattans, though Shawn Upshaw’s lead vocal incorporates
traditional gospel techniques. So do the lyrics, which fit squarely in the
quartet mode of preaching, teaching, and in Favour case, preparing.

traditional gospel techniques. So do the lyrics, which fit squarely in the
quartet mode of preaching, teaching, and in Favour case, preparing.
Indeed, two songs telegraph preparation in their titles: “Better
Be Ready” and “Things are Gonna Happen.” And in “How I Know,” the group sings
that the miracles of the Bible days can still happen today, and it can happen
to you, so be on the lookout. “Things Are Gonna Happen” encourages listeners to
keep the possibility of miracles top of mind as a balm against the onslaught of
today’s tragedies.

The title track sets the group’s Soul Train-sweet mood from the
start. Jesus makes his disciples fishers of men in “Fisherman,” and, by
extension, anyone seeking discipleship today. But following Christ, sings
Favour, means adopting Christian values of love, not hate. We need to
live, not kill.

Group manager, songwriter, arranger, and baritone Byron Brown
gives the EP a crisp production, though it would have been even better
with less electronic drums and synth, which at times take away from the
serenity of the harmonies. It would be fascinating to hear Favour sing a
cappella.

The album
is reminiscent of the self-produced church choir recordings that proliferated
in the 1970s and 1980s. The 36-member Mckee Choir is a decent group with
an above average, albeit uncredited, female lead vocalist whose intense vocal
especially shines on the title track and “Try Jesus.”

Contemporary
gospel music is the choir’s sweet spot, though it does deliver an up-tempo
hand-clapper with “The Lord is Blessing You.” The title track is the
album’s finest moment. A balladic altar call, the choir and soulful lead
ask, “What shall it take / How long will you continue to wait / Jesus is
calling you right now.”

The funky
musicians add greatly to the group’s contemporary flair, and while the synth
player is good, the choir would sound even better without synth and ‘80s
electric piano riffs. This particular adornment is standard in gospel
these days, but when it comes right down to it, organ, acoustic piano, guitar,
bass, and drums are the main ingredients for a good gospel album (although brass
adds a dramatic touch). Beyond that, the music can either overwhelm the
singers it is supposed to support or is so synthetic that it is anachronistic.

Nevertheless,
the Mckee Choir members put their heart and soul into their singing on this
album and undoubtedly provide Dunham Temple with lively worship services.

Don’t
let the flagrant typo on the cover and CD scare you away. This is a case when
the book should not be judged by its cover.
As
they demonstrate on their new Sharp Records CD, Come Too Far, The Golden
Crowns of Louisville, Kentucky, are as good as any of the popular recording
quartets on the road today. Their harmonies are tight, the lead singing
crackles with emotion, the band is strong, though the use of synth in this and
any gospel quartet, regardless of the talent of the player, results in a
polyester sound that pulls from, rather than enhances, the music’s
authenticity.
Nevertheless,
the seven-track EP opens powerfully with the title cut, a crowd-grabbing drive
selection led by the shouting vocals of lead singer Howard McFadden Jr. Riffing
on the “come too far” motive, “Come a Long Way” is sung with plaintive passion.
Other selections traverse similarly traditional quartet territory, interjecting
classic gospel clauses and phrases in songs about gratitude (“Everything I
Have”), mother gone home (“Waiting and Watching”), and the day of one’s
salvation (“Since I Met Jesus”).
The
Golden Crowns give the chestnut, “Where Shall I Be” (aka “Where Shall I Be When
the Last Trumpet Sounds”) a smooth reading, suggesting the calm confidence of
those who are spiritually prepared for the end of days.
The
group’s professionalism is explained during the introduction to a multi-song
retrospective simply called “The Medley.” Here we learn that the Golden Crowns
go back 77 years, first organized in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as the Shanklin
Brothers.
According
to the latest edition of The Gospel Discography, the Golden Crowns made
one 45 each for the Wonderful and BJ labels. Seventy-seven years is a long time
to be on the gospel highway, but here’s hoping that the group’s new CD attracts
the attention of those who can take them the next mile of the way.
